Computer is a machine for performing calculations automatically. A computer is a programmable machine that receives input, stores and manipulates data and provides output in a useful format.
Input-Process-Output
The computer may seem like a very complicated machine, but it basically does four simple tasks: input, process, store and output.
Input
Input means to put into something into computer. An Input device enables one to communicate with the computer. Input device are used to enter information and issue commands. Examples of input devices are the keyboard, mouse, scanners, video cameras and micro-phones.
Process
Information received from the input devices will then be processed in the Central Processing Unit (CPU). The CPU's job is to process instructions, perform calculations and manage the flow of information through a computer system. The CPU not only communicates with the input devices, but also the output and storage devices to perform tasks.
A storage device hold information. For the computer to receive instructions about what processing is to be done to the information, it must be held inside the computer long enough to be acted upon or processed. A hard drive, tape drive, floppy drive and CDROM drive are storage devices. The computer uses information stored on these devices to perform tasks.
Output
After the information has been processed or the necessary tasks completed on the information, it will be outputted to you. The output device enables a computer to communicate with you. These devices display information on a screen, create printed copies or generate sound. Some of these devices are the monitor, printer and speakers.
A computer works very fast and does the followings functions:
Input: It takes data format the keyboard or any other input device. The data entered in the computer is called input.
Processing: The CPU of the computer works on the data entered into it. It works according to your instructions. The working by the CPU on data is called processing.
Output: After the processing is done, the information is displayed on the monitor. If you want to print the output on the printer, you can also do so. This information on the monitor or on the printer is called output.
In addition to the above three function of input, processing and output, there is another important function of computer and that is to store data for future use. Computer can store huge amount of data in the. This Function is called Storage.
